Being an AVID lover of the books - I was more than a little hesistant about going to see the film. I was disapointed. True the dragon was animated spectacularly, and the fight/battle scenes were a wonder to behold! But the fim makers missed out the "big-ness" of the fantasy world, which the author made SO CLEAR in his novels. In the film it like only took them DAYS instead of MONTHS to reach the Varden. Hello people? What is UP with that?!? Also: the bad guy? The "evil" warlock? Nada. He wouldn't scare a BABY. But to be fair, the shade (the warlock's underling) was very well acted out, and VERY scary. (make-up e.t.c.) So. The verdict: If you're a lover of the books, don't bother going to see it. Nine out of ten, you're going to be disapointed. BUT. If you love fantasy, and action films, then you will LOVE it. It has gorgeous locations in the pines of the mountains, awesome fight scenes, some wit, amazing make-up jobs, and special effects. So what are you waiting for? Go see it already. But book lovers - don't say I didn't warn you...
