When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I couldn’t wait to see it. I’ve been a sci-fi fan since I was a kid, so when the trailer gave me a glimpse of what the movie was like, I knew I was in for a treat.
It needs to be said that this movie strays faaaaar from the book. So far, in fact, that it should have been given a different title. However, I don’t mind, because I liked the movie much better than the book, anyway. The beauty of the big-screen adaptation of the movie is that the virus that overwhelms mankind results in a disease with more rabies-like symptoms than the vampiric symptoms in the book. I loved this idea because if you’ve seen one vampire movie, you’ve seen them all. The one positive side of Matheson’s book, however, is that Robert Neville attempts to make sense of vampirism not through spiritual means, but through science. A very different twist as the vampire genre goes.
As much as I loved this movie, it was very difficult to watch at times. We watch a likeable character’s sanity being whittled away into dust. We can’t help but route for him, hoping that he can hang on just a little more.
The only negative word I have to say about this movie is that the ending was abrupt, and wasn’t fleshed out very well. It gave me the impression that it was a race to beat the deadline that was quickly approaching.
As usual, Will Smith proves why he’s one of the top talents in Hollywood today. He gives a very solid, heart-wrenching performance. 4 solid stars out of 5.
